QSMP-20 low-cost STM32MP2 solder-down SoM

Pin-compatible dual-core STM32MP235 module

QSMP-20 combines the cost-effectiveness associated with STM32MP1 series modules with the 64-bit performance of STM32MP2. Using DDR3L RAM, and maintaining a common pinout with QSMP-15, the new SoM provides a performance upgrade for just a couple of Euros uplift in price.

QSMP-20 is a 27mm x 27mm QFN Style solder-down system-on-modules with STM32MP235 processor which provides two ARM Cortex-A35 cores clocked atQSMP-20 with STM32MP235C 1.2GHz, 4GB eMMC persistent memory and 512MB DDR3L RAM. The QSMP-20 module is square, with a height of 2.3mm. Its QS-standard pinout style features a 1mm pitch with 100 edge-located pads providing unparalleled miniaturisation, thermal efficiency and EMI minimisation – the base functions as both a ground pad and a thermal conductor. The module requires a single 3.3v supply.

The module’s STM32MP235 processor affords excellent support for touch-screen GUIs thanks to a powerful 3D GPU, and also includes a 0.6 TOPS NPU for machine learning applications. A full HD VPU supports video encode/decode.  An additional internal ARM Cortex-M33 microcontroller core with FPU is included. A wide range of interfaces (see table) includes RGB and MIPI-DSI display interfaces, Gb Ethernet, SD/eMMC, USB Host/OTG, 3x UARTs, 3x I2C, 2x SPI, PWM, SAI and 2x CANbus .  The module offers an extended temperature spec of   -25C to +85C.

QSMP comes with a dedicated development system, equipped with Linux BSP.

solder-down qfn module STM32M1 devkitThe QSMP-20 module has its own development kit type QSBASE1 with parallel RGB display, and also works with the universal QSBASE4 kit which supports those QS modules with MIPI-DSI display interface. Both are supplied with Linux running out of the box.

QSBASE1

The QSBASE1 development kit is supplied with a QSMP-20 -15 or -13 module. There is an RGB connector for a touch screen (which can be optionally purchased), and connectors for SD Card, Gb Ethernet, USB Host. USB Power supply, and debug UART. All 100 module pins are brought to 0.1″ solder pads.

QSBASE4

QS and QSX modules with MIPI-DSI display support, including QSMP-20 may use the QSBASE4 baseboard for development purposes.

QSBASE4 is designed to accept socketed versions of all QS and QSX modules, and features:

  • Gb Ethernet
  • 2-port USB hub
  • 2-Lane MIPI display connector – Raspberry Pi compatible
  • 2-Lane MIPI camera connector
  • Micro USB to UART bridge for debug
  • USB type-C connector for client/power
  • Expansion connector – RasPi power/I2C/SPI/UART compatible + CAN, SDIO
  • JTAG ICE headerQSBASE4 for solder-down modules in socketed form

Special socketed versions of QS/QSX modules are connected via two 80-pin push-down connectors.

The QSBASE4 works with a standard Raspberry Pi  7″ touch display which is readily obtainable (we may also have stock). It is supplied complete with a USB-C cable for power and flashing, and a micro USB-B cable for debugging. The socketed modules are preflashed with a Linux image (contact support for details, and possible customisation).

longevity iconGuaranteed Longevity
Longevity is a major issue for ARM-based system-on-modules, as they don’t conform to any industry-standard pinout. Since the first system-on-module shipped in 2002, we have guaranteed the lifetime of our products. For our NXP and ST Micro based products longevity guarantees are underwritten by the vendor, with 10 year lifetime guaranteed, with an expectation of 15 years from launch.

european manufactureBecause Ka-Ro modules are manufactured in a high-quality small-batch production facility in Ka-Ro’s own factory in Aachen Germany, there are never problems with manufacturing standards or with supply. If you order 100 modules and we don’t have them in stock, we will make them. Often, modules are produced in large batches by volume-oriented contract manufacturers in the Far East, and once they are gone, they are gone, until orders for at least 5,000 accumulate in order to justify a run.

tickOur BSPs for  Yocto Linux, Debian, Windows 10 IoT Core and QNX are in most cases complete, and are designed so that you can use them without further development or modification. One of the key advantages of the system-on-module approach is rapid time-to-market, and this cannot be realised if there is an unknown amount of extra work to be done to achieve a complete production ready hardware + software platform.

compatibleQS family modules offer a high degree of pin-compatibility. It is therefore possible to design baseboards which are ready for different QS/QSX family members, so that decisions on processing power can be deferred until the application is finished and tested, without delaying completion of hardware design. Additionally, customer products may be upgraded as new, more powerful pin-compatible modules become available.
