Tiny low-cost solder-down module with NXP’s i.MX91 processor
27mm SoM offers low-power, low-cost 64-bit solution
The QS91 is a 27mm x 27mm QFN Style solder-down system-on-module with NXP’s i.MX9131 with single-coreARM Cortex-A55 processor, plus RAM, Flash memory and power management, integrated on a QFN-footprint PCB with excellent EMC, thermal and cost optimisations. The module is square, with a height of 2.7mm, and requires a single 3.3v supply. An extended operating temperature range of -25C to +85C is supported.
The QS91 module’s i.MX91 processor provides a 1.4 GHz ARM Cortex-A55 core. There is 512MB of of LPDDR4 RAM, 4GB eMMC Flash, and a wide range of interfaces including dual USB and Ethernet.
The single-core design offers energy efficiency and reduced cost, in comparison to the i.MX93-based QS93. Display connectivity is simplified by the RGB parallel display interface. Optimal security features are provided by NXP’s Edgelock Secure Enclave.
QS91 comes with a dedicated development system, equipped with Linux BSP.

In order to provide developer access to the module’s RGB display output, a special development kit – the QSBASE91 – is available for QS91. QSBASE91 is a simple 2-sided PCB design and features:
- GB Ethernet
- USB
- RGB TFT display connector
- USB type-C connector power
- SD Card
For production purposes, you will require a custom baseboard for the solder-down version of your module, and we are happy to offer baseboard design and manufacture as a service.

QS91 may be used via a socketed module with QSBASE4 for headless designs (enquire for more details), but because of the standard parallel RGB display output is generally used with a dedicated QSBASE91 development kit based on QSBASE1 which may be purchased online from our UK stock.
QFN-Style SoM Advantages
For larger volume applications, or where a tiny footprint is needed, Ka-Ro QFN solder-down modules fit the bill perfectly.

Guaranteed Longevity
Longevity is a major issue for ARM-based system-on-modules, as they don’t conform to any industry-standard pinout. Since the first system-on-module shipped in 2002, we have guaranteed the lifetime of our products. For our NXP and ST Micro based products longevity guarantees are underwritten by the vendor, with 10 year lifetime guaranteed, with an expectation of 15 years from launch.
Because Ka-Ro modules are manufactured in a high-quality small-batch production facility in Ka-Ro’s own factory in Aachen Germany, there are never problems with manufacturing standards or with supply. If you order 100 modules and we don’t have them in stock, we will make them. Often, modules are produced in large batches by volume-oriented contract manufacturers in the Far East, and once they are gone, they are gone, until orders for at least 5,000 accumulate in order to justify a run.
Our BSPs for Yocto Linux, Debian, Windows 10 IoT Core and QNX are in most cases complete, and are designed so that you can use them without further development or modification. One of the key advantages of the system-on-module approach is rapid time-to-market, and this cannot be realised if there is an unknown amount of extra work to be done to achieve a complete production ready hardware + software platform.
QS family modules offer a high degree of pin-compatibility. It is therefore possible to design baseboards which are ready for different QS/QSX family members, so that decisions on processing power can be deferred until the application is finished and tested, without delaying completion of hardware design. Additionally, customer products may be upgraded as new, more powerful pin-compatible modules become available.
