QNX products are designed for embedded systems running on 64-bit ARM or x86 platforms. The latest version of QNX – QNX SDP 8.0 has been rearchitected to work seamlessly and scalably with both homogeneous and heterogeneous multicore processors. The QNX Software Development Platform has been qualified to various safety and security standards for use in products with high criticality and low tolerance for failure and is widely used in automotive, medical, transportation, pro-audio, military and industrial embedded systems. These standards include IEC 61508 SIL 3, ISO 26262 ASIL D and IEC 62304 Class C.

Constantly updated according to a predetermined lifecycle, QNX SDP 8.0 provides a secure solution which provides out-of-the-box conformity to the requirements of the EU Cyber Resilience Act. Vulnerabilities are documented throughout the life cycle. Secure boot as well as encrypted storage and transport are supported, along with OTA updating. The SBOM is tightly managed to ensure resilience.

In support of those migrating from Linux, the API is fully Posix-compliant (in other words, the same!). A wide range of open-source utilities are supported alongside GCC tools.

QNX SDP 8.0 offers hard real-time with minimal jitter and latency. The small-footprint microkernel architecture separates drivers from the kernel, so that in the event of a driver failure, kernel operation continues and the driver can be restarted or other action taken.

When is QNX better than Linux?

We work with both Linux and QNX, so here’s the answer in 100 words:

Linux offers the broadest support – you can use any hardware or software and benefit from the experience of those who have gone before.  Initiatives like the Yocto project tame the considerable complexity of Linux, which has rightly become the default choice for most embedded projects.

So when to consider QNX? High Availability is one advantage of QNX – it’s microkernel based, so doesn’t “crash” as such. There is real-time support out of the box. Cybersecurity compliance is built in as regulations like CRA mandate that commercial software must conform. Support for functional safety to the highest levels means that QNX is extensively used in many automotive, medical, robotics, and industrial applications.
