TRITON-TX51 is a 68mm x 26mm SODIMM format system-on-module with Freescale’s powerful i.MX515 multimedia processor featuring 800MHz ARM Cortex-A8 core with Neon VFP unit, graphics system with OpenGL ES 2.0, on-chip Ethernet, and dedicated video codecs, as well as a wide range of connectivity. TRITON-TX51 has Windows CE 6.0 and Linux 3.0 Board Support Packages which ship with the StarterKit-5 development system. A Windows Embedded Compact 7 Board Support Package is also available.

Alongside the i.MX51, the TRITON-TX51 features 128MB of high performance low-power mobile DDR and 128MB NAND Flash, as well as power management, real-time clock and Ethernet and USB PHY provision. The module takes a single 3.0 to 5.5v supply and provides up to 1A output current 1.8V and 3.3V power outputs for use on the baseboard.

The TRITON-TX51 is suited to a wide range of demanding tasks, including video and DSP processing – thanks to the Neon Vector Floating Point unit and dedicated video codecs providing D1 encode and 720p decode for MPEG-4/H264. Graphics applications are accelerated by the dedicated GPU, which offers OpenGL ES 2.0 support which enables specialist UI environments such as Microsoft Silverlight and Adobe Flash Lite to be used with excellent results. Security, medical and industrial projects will find many uses for these capabilities.

Guaranteed lifetime is a key reason to choose TRITON family products, some of which have already been shipping for over 10 years. For our i.MX based products longevity guarantees are underwritten my Freescale, who offer 10 to 15 year minimum lifetimes for the i.MX ARM-based range. We expect to shadow the Freescale lifetimes and additionally offer our customers a contractual 10-year longevity guarantee for TRITON-TX-modules. Further security is provided by the pin-compatible nature of the range, which means that suitable baseboard designs can take all the modules from this family, including those based on i.MX25, i.MX27, i.MX28, TI AM3354, i.MX51, i.MX53 and i.MX6, and allows older modules to be replaced by the latest designs, with new features, better price-performance, and renewed longevity.
Thanks to the broad connectivity of the i.MX51 microcontroller, the TRITON-TX51 module provides an extensive range of interfaces . As well as 2xRS-232, Ethernet, Keypad, SPI, SSP, I2C, I2S, USB 2.0 OTG and Host, and SD Card are provided. The Feature Table shows the resources available from the complete development system, and whether those resources are provided in hardware by the microcontroller, or by additional circuitry on the module or development baseboard.
For development purposes, the TRITON-TX51 module plugs into a StarterKit-5 baseboard, and powers up running Windows Embedded Compact 7, CE 6.0 or Linux. The StarterKit allows you to begin application development immediately on a platform which is actually a superset of your final production hardware and software. A simple custom baseboard derived from the StarterKit design is then created to suit your application. The production quality Board Support Package (BSP) which is supplied as part of the package is rebuilt accordingly, the module is plugged in, and the production platform is complete. The custom baseboard can be designed by you, or by our services group, but by keeping the high-speed multilayer electronics on the module, this task is made relatively inexpensive and quick.

The StarterKit-5 provides a complete development environment based on TRITON-TX51, running Linux or Windows Embedded Compact 7 / CE 6.0 out-of-the-box. The whole system is USB-powered, so requires no external PSU (except when used with optional touch-screen).stk5-diagram-lightThe development system consists of a baseboard which provides connectors for all the module interfaces, and includes additional peripherals such as an SGTL5000 audio codec, TSC2007 touchscreen controller and video DAC.
