Production-ready modular gateway with multiple radios

SparkGate-7 is a complete solution for IoT and M2M applications – an open IoT gateway combining Cloud connection via a cellular modem, plus WiFi, Ethernet and RS-485, with a 6LoWPAN IEEE 802.15.4 radio module supporting Thread and Zigbee sensors. Bluetooth 4.0 is also included.

The gateway is based on a SMARC-compatible baseboard and is a complete software and hardware solution that is ready to integrate in your IoT product.

At the heart of the SparkGate-7 solution is a system-on-module, connected via the SMARC-compliant interface. The Spark-501 module, measuring 82 x 50mm  is powered by an ARM Cortex-A5 based processor, with 256MB RAM, running a Yocto-built Linux.

Because the most complex hardware is contained within the multilayer 82 x 50mm processor module, the SparkGate-7 carrier board forms the basis of an easily configurable solution, which can be used as-is, or customised to minimize cost and offer features which may be project-specific. To further facilitate prototyping and exploration, daughterboard headers are provided, including support for Mikrobus Click modules.

The onboard Telit modem offers cloud connectivity, including via SSL, allowing secure communication for JSON/REST.

With latent power consumption as low as 30mW, SparkGate-7 is amenable to battery/solar cell power. At the same time, because it is a full-featured Linux system, touch screen display, audio and USB are supported out of the box.

SparkGate-7 with Spark-501 module, including Telit modem is available to order (see below) with low-volume prices under £100/130€ depending on configuration.

An IoT Gateway is a device which aggregates connections to a number of sensors and/or actuators. Usually these “edge” devices are connected via a short or long-range radio system. Short range radio systems are often known as Personal Area Networks, and are typically based on an IEEE 802.15.4 radio working in the 2.4GHz band using protocols such as 6LoWPAN, Thread and Zigbee. Another short range radio system is Bluetooth.

Long-range wireless networks tend to operate over sub-GHz bands – examples include LoRaWAN and Sigfox.

Data is then “backhauled” to a remote server, or to the cloud, via a modem, WiFi or Ethernet.

SparkGate-7 is be available with Spark-501 module currently shipping without combined WiFi/Bluetooth radio. As of July 2016, we expect the version with WiFi/Bluetooth radio to begin shipping early August. The baseboard itself carries the optional Telit modem in 3 versions
