In-System programming of Flash and CPLD devices

Corelis ScanPlus tools allow users to program or reprogram Flash memory devices or Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs) after the devices have been soldered onto the printed circuit board.

As densities of CPLDs and flash memories increase and package sizes decrease, it becomes difficult to program these devices with an off-line CPLD or flash programmer. For designs that include a JTAG IEEE Std 1149.1 interface, it is possible to program these devices in-circuit, while soldered in place.

Programming in-circuit is desirable in both development and production environments. For development, engineers can reconfigure CPLDs, or change code stored in flash memory devices during the development process. For production, in-circuit programming allows devices to remain on the shelf in an unprogrammed or blank state. These blank devices can then be installed at assembly and programmed in-circuit, thus reducing programming and tracking costs.

The in-circuit programming of CPLDs and flash devices is achieved in different ways. For CPLDs, the device's own boundary-scan programming capability is directly accessed by the ScanPlus programmer software. For flash memories, which do not have their own boundary-scan capability, the ScanPlus software uses the boundary-scan capability of the system processor to take control of the address, data and control busses in order to achieve programming.
